Reading the place, revealing what is already there

The positioning does not rest on a formal signature, but on the ability to read a place and reformulate its project from what already exists.

Training

The foundation is the Paris-La Villette School of Architecture: it is there that multi-scalar reading, territorial understanding, synthesis, attention to the brief, and the idea of architecture as a situated response rather than a formal gesture were consolidated. Earlier, Penninghen was decisive for one precise thing — drawing, understood not as graphic skill but as a tool of perception, judgement, composition and the rapid shaping of thought. Added to this, brief but formative, was the encounter with Hilton McConnico: a few days, but a lasting eye for atmosphere, material and the sensitive presence of places.

The doctrine

The project is organised around place, the existing, thresholds, uses and temporalities — and the capacity of a building to endure, to absorb discontinuities, to host transformation. The threshold is here a matrix: not a mere physical limit, but a space of passage, ambiguity and relation between states. This reading draws on a doctrine of feasibility and project formulation, where defining the brief, analysing reality, comparing scenarios and asking the right questions matter as much as producing a form.

The professional path

A trajectory marked by movement, autonomy and several geographies of life and work — Paris, Hanoi, Ruffec, international missions. A DPLG graduate in 2003, trained in earthquake-resistant design, Yann Bacquet built his authority on complex projects, existing sites, reformulated briefs, interrupted or unstable situations: where both a fine reading of reality and a strong capacity for synthesis and judgement are needed. There the architect is as much interpreter, framer, strategist and translator between worlds as designer.

The evidence

The base of experience counts about fifty professional feasibility missions and some seventy humanitarian missions in Southeast Asia. It is one of the foundations of the practice's legitimacy: a proven knowledge of difficult contexts, reformulated briefs and project trajectories carried through to their transformation.

Research and the studio

The practice extends into research: architectural resilience understood not as a label, but as an ancient and fundamental capacity of architecture to endure and to host transformation; open programming, which explores many hypotheses before fixing a destination; the neighbourhood as unit of response. It takes shape in the studio AD VITAM — a structured ecosystem where architecture, the transformation of the existing and feasibility form the core, surrounded by editorial, educational and cultural branches.
